Sri Lanka’s nights are quieter than Thailand’s and smaller in scale than Bali’s — and for a lot of travellers, that is exactly the appeal. You will find bonfire parties on the sand at Arugam Bay, rooftop cocktails above Colombo, and full moon gatherings at Hikkaduwa, all without the crowds or the hard sell you get elsewhere in Asia.

Before You Go Out: Three Things Every Visitor Should Know
1. Full moon (Poya) days are dry days. Every full moon is a public holiday in Sri Lanka, and the sale of alcohol is prohibited nationwide. Bars close, liquor shops shut, and most restaurants stop serving. Larger hotels will often still serve registered in-house guests through room service, but the streets go quiet. Check a Poya calendar before you plan a big night — this catches out more visitors than anything else on this list.
2. The party moves with the monsoon. Sri Lanka has two coasts with opposite seasons. From November to April the south and west coasts (Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Galle) are in full swing. From May to September the action shifts east to Arugam Bay. Turn up on the wrong coast in the wrong month and you will find shuttered bars and empty beaches.
3. Colombo has real dress codes. Upmarket clubs and rooftop bars in the capital enforce smart casual — no beachwear, no flip-flops, and closed shoes for men. On the coast, barefoot and boardshorts is entirely normal.
Colombo: Rooftop Bars, City Clubs & Live Music
Colombo is where Sri Lanka’s nightlife is at its most polished. The scene is concentrated around Colombo 3 (Kollupitiya) and Colombo 7 (Cinnamon Gardens), and most venues are within a short tuk-tuk ride of each other. Things start late — arriving before 10pm often means an empty room.
- Savage Colombo — Industrial-chic space with international DJs playing techno and deep house. Entry $10–$20 at weekends for foreigners, drinks $5–$8. Smart casual enforced.
- Vogue Lounge — Bollywood and EDM nights, dressier crowd, popular with Colombo’s young professional set.
- Sky Track Lounge & Bar — Rooftop views across the city skyline and signature cocktails. Best at sunset, before the clubs fill up.
- Colombo pub crawls — Organised groups take in around five bars in a night, typically $20–$30 per person including some drinks. A practical option for solo travellers who want company.
Unawatuna & Hikkaduwa: Beach Parties and Open-Air Clubs
This stretch of the south coast is the heart of Sri Lanka’s beach party scene between November and April. Venues sit directly on the sand, most have no cover charge midweek, and the atmosphere is relaxed rather than rowdy.
- Lucky Tuna (Unawatuna) — Reggae during the day, EDM after dark, with monthly full moon parties on the beach.
- Funky De Bar (Hikkaduwa) — Casual beach bar known for reggae nights and good seafood. A gentle place to start the evening.
- Vibration Nightclub (Hikkaduwa) — The biggest weekly crowds on this coast. Entry $5–$8, cocktails $4–$7.
- BedSpace Beach Club — Fire dancers and beachfront cocktails, popular for sunset onwards.
- Coral Reef Hotel pool parties — Saturday afternoons into the evening, commercial EDM, entry $3–$5.
- Top Secret Beach Club — Quieter, open-air, good for a drink without a dance floor.

Arugam Bay: Surf Town Sundowners & Beach Jams
Arugam Bay’s nightlife is inseparable from its surf scene. Evenings are informal — beach fires, acoustic sets, and bars that empty out early because everyone is paddling out at dawn. The season runs May to September, and outside those months much of the town closes down entirely.
- Hideaway — Sunset beats and a surfer crowd. Happy hour knocks around $1 off drinks.
- Whiskey Point — Monthly full moon parties, entry around $5.
- La Luna Beach Bar — Warm lighting, cocktails, and an easy social crowd. Good for solo travellers.

Mirissa & Galle: Laid-Back Bars and Live Bands
If clubs are not your thing, this is the part of the coast to base yourself. Evenings here lean towards live music, long dinners and a drink somewhere with a view.
- Zephyr Restaurant & Bar (Mirissa) — Cocktails, fresh seafood and regular live music.
- Doctor’s House (Mirissa) — Bonfire nights and a rustic, low-key setting. Entry is often free or under $5.
- Galle Fort — Not a party destination, but the ramparts at dusk, jazz bars and lantern-lit lanes make for one of the most atmospheric evenings on the island.

Prices below are typical for foreign visitors, in US dollars. Colombo is noticeably more expensive than the coast, and beach towns are cheaper again midweek.

Getting Home Safely
- Use a ride app. PickMe and Uber both operate in Colombo and most tourist towns. Fares are metered, which avoids the late-night haggling that comes with flagging down a tuk-tuk on the street.
- Agree the fare first if you do take a street tuk-tuk without a meter.
- Avoid unlit beach stretches late at night, particularly alone. Beaches that are busy at 9pm can be completely empty by 1am.
- Watch your drink as you would anywhere, and stick to sealed bottles or drinks poured in front of you.
- Carry small notes. Many beach bars are cash-only and change for large notes can be scarce after midnight.
